Greek-American Alexi Giannoulias, a Democratic former state treasurer for Illinois and a onetime nominee for US Senator for that state, has reportedly stated that he may run for the Illinois Secretary of State position in 2022.
According to a reporter from Politico Playbook, he will make the move after the retirement of Jesse White two years from now.
“Secretary White is one of the finest public servants I have ever known. His shoes will be near impossible to fill, but if I run, I would work very hard to try and continue his legacy of caring and principled leadership,” Giannoulias stated to interviewers from Politico Playbook.
“If this (2020) election has shown us anything, it’s that democracy is under siege and Secretaries of State across the country are on the front lines, ensuring that everyone can participate freely and fairly in elections,” Giannoulias explained.
Politico Playbook, which keeps a close eye on developments on both the national and state scene, said that the Greek-American financier had already met with White to seek his endorsement for the position.
