On Friday the United States embassy in Ankara issued a Tweet expressing its sorrow for the deaths which occurred as a result of the earthquake in the sea between Samos, Greece and Izmir, Turkey.

The Embassy encourages all Americans who are in the area to check in with friends and family to make sure they know they are all right. Any Americans who have been affected by the earthquake, which measured at least 6.7 on the Richter scale, are encouraged to call the hotline which the Embassy set up for that purpose.

The initial readings on the strength of the quake were reported as 6.7, but the United States Geological Service later estimated the strength at 7.0, a much more powerful temblor.
