Dr. Anthony Fauci, the US’s top infectious disease specialist, said on Sunday “this is going to be a bad week” for the nation as the country recorded more than 312,000 coronavirus cases and almost 8,500 deaths.
“We’re going to continue to see an escalation,” Fauci told host Margaret Brennan of CBS News’ “Face the Nation.” “Also, we should hope that within a week, maybe a little bit more, we’ll start to see a flattening out of the curve and coming down…
“Things are going to get bad and we need to be prepared for that. It’s going to be shocking to some and it certainly is really disturbing to see that… just buckle down…We’ve got to get through this week that is coming up because it’s going to be a bad week.”

Fauci said that it was crucial for the coronavirus to get “globally under control,” or it could become seasonal. He also said that efforts for a vaccine and the beginning of clinical trials will hopefully mean the US is more prepared if there is a resurgence of the virus.
He added that in the next week or two the United States will have a much greater capacity to perform the types of testing needed before society can return to normal, although they are not “100% there yet.”
