Bipartisan Amendment Aims to Link Turkish Provocations With US Sanctions

Greece’s AMNA news agency reported on Thursday that a bipartisan amendment has been submitted to the US Congress, aiming to link Turkey’s illegal actions in the broader Eastern Mediterranean region with the sanctions recently announced by President Trump.

More specifically, Republican Congressman Gus Bilirakis and Democratic Congressman Ted Deutch proposed that in order for the recent US sanctions against Turkey to be lifted in the future, Ankara must cease all its illegal violations of international law in the region.

These sanctions include those brought against senior Turkish ministers themselves as well as the imposition of a 50-percent tariff on Turkish steel.

”We don’t know how the situation will develop, as President Erdogan may come to some sort of deal with Mike Pence and Mike Pompeo, but the fact that the bill has been tabled means that plenty of light will be cast on Turkish activities in the Aegean and Cyprus,” the chief of the Hellenic American Leadership Council Endy Zemenides told AMNA.
