Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades Highlights Turkish Provocations in New York

President of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades said on Sunday in New York that there can be no restart of reunification talks as long as the Turkish side continues its provocations and keeps on violating international law.

Talking to reporters soon after he arrived in New York for the UN General Assembly which begins this week, Anastasiades said that at “a time when the Secretary General of the UN is proposing a way out to resume a fruitful dialogue, Turkey continues its provocations either by actions challenging the sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus in its Exclusive Economic Zone or by statements threatening to illegally reopen Famagusta.”

The Cypriot President underlined however, that he stands firmly, “with full political will to contribute to what we have been seeking since the collapse of the talks in the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana in 2017.”

Referring to his upcoming contacts in New York, such as the meeting with the representatives of the five permanent Security Council member states, Anastasiades said he will “convey his determination for a new start which would enable the creation of peaceful coexistence and a functional and viable state.”
