New Archbishop Elpidophoros Sets St. Nicholas Church at Ground Zero as First Priority

The new Greek Orthodox Archbishop of America Elpidophoros gave his first press conference in New York on Friday, following his arrival to the United States on Thursday.

During his press conference, Elpidophoros spoke about the new church of Saint Nicholas:

”The first and most urgent issue for our (Greek) community is to finish the construction of the church of Saint Nicholas at Ground Zero”, Elpidophoros noted.

The newly appointed Archbishop called Ground Zero ”a sacred place for the American people”.

The construction of the church that was destroyed along with the twin towers on September 11, 2001, is ”a duty of the Greek diaspora toward both the American people and the battle against religious fundamentalism”, Elpidophoros said.

Saint Nicholas is a church under construction as a part of the World Trade Center in Manhattan. The church is designed by famous Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. Originally scheduled to be completed in 2017, the church’s construction was later stalled.
