Prominent members of the Greek-American community gathered in New York on Friday for a Hellenic American Chamber of Commerce gala to honor Nicolas A. Vernicos as their “Person of the Year.”

Vernicos, a well-known philanthropist and entrepreneur, is the president of the International Chamber of Commerce and also serves as president of the Vernicos Maritime Group.

He is a fourth-generation shipping and tourism industry entrepreneur and comes originally  from the island of Sifnos. He has significant experience in the areas of corporate governance, banking and financial services.

Vernicos has been in the shipping and trading business since 1968, managing one of the oldest surviving Greek maritime firms. The enterprise was founded in Constantinople in 1851 and has operated from Piraeus since the beginning of the twentieth century.

The black-tie gala was also an opportunity to further promote the exchange of ideas between the U.S. and Greece on commercial, cultural and educational matters, as well as to inspire future collaboration.
