Pompeo Says Prespa Accord Demonstrates Vision, Courage, and Persistence

The United States was among the countries which welcomed the Greek Parliament’s ratification of the Prespa Agreement on Friday. The parliamentary vote, in effect, ends the name dispute between Greece and the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM).

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement, “The leaders of Greece demonstrated vision, courage, and persistence in their pursuit of a solution to the name dispute, which will allow the future Republic of North Macedonia to take its rightful place in NATO and the EU.”

Pompeo added that “The United States applauds this historic opportunity to advance stability, security, and prosperity throughout the region.”

The resolution of the name dispute in Athens on Friday paves the way for the Balkan country of FYROM, to join NATO, and it may even join the EU at a later date.
