Yanis Varoufakis, Greece’s former finance minister, is teaming up with Vermont Senator and former U.S. presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.
Sanders and Varoufakis are launching efforts to re-imagine progressive politics by launching a new movement called Progressives International. This new initiative was announced by Varoufakis in Rome on Friday.
Also invited to the new movement is incoming Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, as reported by BuzzFeed. This new movement intends to counter the nationalist movement being established by such personalities as Steve Bannon, which intends to unite European nationalists and the alt-right in time for the European Union’s parliamentary elections in May.
The new movement spearheaded by Varoufakis and Sanders serves as a complement to the left-wing political party that Varoufakis has established, called European Spring, which is currently campaigning for the forthcoming EU parliamentary elections. As with Progressives International, Varoufakis hopes that his party will help counter the alt-right nationalist parties which are gaining electoral ground in the EU, including the Golden Dawn party in his native Greece.
A unique characteristic of European Spring is that, in an effort to demonstrate the party’s internationalist stance, the party will run citizens of one country as candidates in another country according to BuzzFeed.
