Dennis Mehiel, a prominent Greek American Democrat from New York, is funding the “Show Up 2018” campaign whose goal is to convince American voters to register for the midterm elections.
The campaign aims at the approximately 140 million Americans who stayed home even though they were eligible to vote during the 2014 midterm elections. With about 40 million of those being 18-29, the country experienced the lowest voter turnout since World War II.
Show Up 2018 is a non-partisan organization run day-to-day by a team of young, politically-engaged activists and creators seeking to re-brand voting and make engagement in the political process appealing to Americans who “couldn’t care less about politics.”
Mehiel, the Principal Shareholder and Chairman of U. S. Corrugated, Inc., has long been active in New York State political life.
He served for 12 years as a member of the Democratic National Committee and is a former Chairman of the Westchester County Democratic Committee. For eight years he served as an Officer and Director of the New York League of Conservation Voters. He was the New York State Chair of the Kerry Presidential Campaign in 2004 and was the Democratic Nominee for Lt. Governor in 2002.
He was also Chairman, CEO and Principal Shareholder of Box USA, which he founded in 1966. The company was built primarily through the acquisition of financially troubled competitors, many in Chapter 11. When sold to International Paper in 2004, Box USA was then the Nation’s largest independent producer of corrugated shipping containers operating 22 corrugated packaging facilities and two containerboard mills, all located within the continental United States.
During the course of his career the Greek-American has been instrumental in creating or saving thousands of U.S. based manufacturing jobs.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo recently appointed the Greek-American as Chairman of the Battery Park City Authority. BPCA operates a 92 Acre property created when the World Trade Center was constructed 40 years ago at the south end of Manhattan. The site contains ten million square feet of commercial space, residential properties with a population of 14,000 along with parks and other public spaces.
Dennis Mehiel spoke recently to Greek Reporter about his Greek roots, Hellenism in the U.S., his views on the economy and the need to raise taxation for the rich.
