“Nelson Mandela was a relentless fighter for independence, peace and human rights,” Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Monday, addressing world leaders in New York.
The Greek prime minister spoke at the Nelson Mandela Peace Conference during the 73rd United Nations General Assembly in New York.
In his speech about Mandela, Tsipras spoke about the Greek government’s achievements in the past four years. Namely, he said that Greece is out of the austerity bailout program, the Greek government is protecting the rights of migrants and minorities, managed the refugee influx with respect to human rights and resolved the issue of the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia name.
The Greek premier said that Mandela’s vision is more relevant today, as the world is facing new wars and conflicts, the widening of social inequalities, a strengthening of racism and a rise of religious fundamentalism.
