Costas Kondylis Among NY’s Most Prolific Architects Dies at 78 (video)

Constantine “Costas” Kondylis, one of Manhattan’s most prolific architects died on Friday. He was 78.

Kondylis was the man most likely responsible for the way Manhattan looks today. He has built thousands of stories all over the Greater New York Area and the world, 86 buildings of which are in Manhattan.

Kondylis, who grew up in Greece, was a frequent collaborator of President Donald Trump.

His portfolio includes the 72-story, 856-foot Trump World Tower at 845 United Nations Plaza, which briefly held the title of worlds tallest residential building, the Trump International Hotel and Tower at Columbus Circle, and some of the buildings that made up the Trump Place complex on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.

Other developers who have hired him include Larry Silverstein, Bruce Ratner, and Joseph Moinian.

He attended the University of Geneva School of Architecture but went on to get a second master’s degree from Columbia University in 1967.

Right after graduation, he worked for Davis Brody & Associates. He then joined Philip Birnbaum & Associates, where he worked for nine years before launching his own firm, Costas Kondylis and Partners, in 1989.

The firm dissolved in 2009 with the departure of three partners, and he started another venture, Kondylis Design.
