Hellenic Charity Ball a Big Success

The Hellenic Charity Ball of the Elios Charitable Foundation at the Fairmont San Francisco was a great success on Saturday night.

This year the glamorous event honored Greek Americans in the Arts and Entertainment Industry. The honorees included TV Host/Journalist Debbie Matenopoulos, Screenwriter Evan Spiliotopoulos, and Photographer Michael Zagaris.

Mistress of Ceremonies was actress Marilu Henner and Live Music and Dancing was provided by Hip Service and Mediterranean Soul.

The Elios Society aims to preserve and promote the spirit, values and ideals of Hellenic culture and heritage through support of the arts and education.

The honorees

Debbie Matenopoulos
Three-time Emmy® nominee for her distinguished work as a TV host and journalist. She started her career at MTV at 17. At 21 she became youngest person in history to hold a permanent co-host position on daytime network television when Barbara Walters handpicked her to be one of the first five cohosts of ABC’s The View. She then went on to host shows for FOX (Good Day Live), the Style Network (the Emmy-nominated Instant Beauty Pageant), and E! (Live from the Red CarpetThe Daily 10Fashion Police), among others. Most recently, she served as co-host of CBS Television’s Emmy®-nominated The Insider. She is currently the co-host of Hallmark Channel’s Home & Family as well as a special correspondent for CBS Television’s flagship entertainment news show Entertainment Tonight.

Evan Spiliotopoulos
Since the late 90’s, he has been a non-stop working Hollywood screenwriter, teaming up with leading companies in the Motion Picture and Television Industries. He wrote on numerous animated films for Disneytoon Studios including: POOH’S HEFFALUMP MOVIE, THE LITTLE MERMAID 3, and TINKERBELL AND THE LOST TREASURE. Evan has worked with Steven Spielberg, Robert Zemeckis, Brett Ratner, Bill Condon, Chris Columbus, JJ Abrams, McG and Timur Bekmabetov. Evan’s most recent work is the Disney release, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST.

Michael Zagaris
A photographer since 1967, Zagaris’ photographs have been dubbed the “last untouched rock archive.” He was responsible for shooting everyone in the rock music scene in San Francisco in the 1970s, including The Clash, Grateful Dead, Blondie, The Sex Pistols, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Led Zeppelin, and many more. His recent book, Total Excess, is an impressive look behind the curtain of the rock and roll scene.
In the 1970s the Greek American photographer started shooting professional sports. He began as a team photographer for the San Francisco 49ers in 1973, and the Oakland A’s in 1981, both of which he continues to shoot to this day. To date Michael has photographed 34 Super Bowls, 12 World Series, and 14 All Star games. His photos have graced the coveted Sports Illustrated cover as well as Time magazine.
