Greek American Organizations Condemn Violence During Erdogan Visit to U.S.

The American Hellenic Council and other community organizations expressed their outrage and condemned the violence by Turkish security staff against American citizens demonstrating against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Washington DC.

Erdogan’s security men and other armed individuals attacked a group of peaceful protesters outside the Turkish ambassador’s residence. Metropolitan Police characterized the incident as “a brutal attack.”

The violent melee left eleven people injured, including a police officer, and nine were taken to a hospital, according to police.

Several Senators and Representatives condemned the violent attack. Senator John McCain has called for Turkey’s ambassador to the U.S. to be removed from the country following the incident.

The American Hellenic Council calls on Greek Americans and all interested to take action and ask from their Representatives to condemn the “assault on American values.” Follow the link below: http://www.americanhellenic.org/condemnturkey

Below is the official statement of the American Hellenic Council:

The American Hellenic Council joins with community organizations, such as the Armenian National Committee of America and the Armenian Assembly of America in condemning Tuesday’s unprovoked violence by Turkish security forces against American citizens in our nation’ capital.
The unprovoked attack against peaceful demonstrators by the security detail of Turkish President Erdogan in the Nation’s Capital which sent several demonstrators to the hospital is an event that cannot be tolerated anywhere, particularly in the US with its tradition of free speech and protection of peaceful demonstrations. This kind of attack is a pattern that is perpetrated by Erdogan’s forces against Turkish citizens themselves.
We stand for the right of free and peaceful expression, dignity, human rights and protection of citizens in the US and other countries. Attacks like these are totally unacceptable for any visiting head of state, including Turkey.
We urge all Greek-American organizations to condemn this latest act of Turkish hate and call upon Congress and the Trump Administration to follow the examples of Senator John McCain (R-AZ), House Foreign Affairs Chairman Representative Ed Royce (R-CA), Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD), and Representative Ted Deutch (D-FL) in condemning this assault on American citizens
