Where Do Greek-Americans Weigh in On the 2016 Elections?

Clinton-Trump-Sanders-Election season is in full swing as the citizens of the United States of America and the world anxiously await the results of each and every primary and the 2016 Presidential elections. With numerous platforms being discussed and debated, how do Greek-Americans weigh in on the nominees?

The question of whether politics in Greece reflects the ideas of Greek-Americans, whether born in the USA or members of expat communities of the Greek diaspora, is yet to be answered. Kathimerini recently published that Greek-Americans in Astoria are voting for Trump by “a landslide.” However, according to some sources, their survey conducted only refers to the opinion of around 10 people who were asked, most of whom seem to agree with Trump’s anti-immigrant stance and see him as a “tough guy” who is a “successful businessman” and “not part of the establishment.”

Gregory Pappas responded to what he called the “exaggeration” of Kathimerini’s survey by conducting one of his own and posting the results in an article on his website, Pappas Post. Pappas asked around 100 people, both republicans and democrats, who they support and received 87 responses, only one of which was pro-Trump and didn’t want his name revealed as he said that he would “never publicly acknowledge it.”

There is much conflicting information on the subject especially revolving around these reports as the majority of Greeks in New York in particular are registered Democrats and some of the wealthiest Greek-Americans throughout the country have been large contributors to Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

However, it is also worth noting that the Greek community in New York also claims to have an active branch of Golden Dawn, the Greek political party that preaches the views of the Nazi party.

GreekReporter is conducting its own survey to better understand the power of the Greek-American vote and what issues influence the community. Take a moment to participate in our survey and a chance to stay at Santorini’s best hotel collection for two nights on us.
