Greek Film Festival in New York

ny-city-greek-film-festivalThe 8th New York Greek Film Festival is set to deliver American audiences a taste of memories and pictures, past and present, from the world of Greece. The festival includes the screening of several Greek films – “Little England” by Pantelis Voulgaris, for instance, a film based on a novel of Ioanna Karystiani and a recent nominee for the Best Foreign-Language Film at the 87th Academy Awards.

According to festival director James DeMetro, there is a major crisis in foreign cinema in the United States. Apart from notable exceptions, foreign films are not easily screened due to the high cost. “The only way to present foreign language films, including Greeks, are museums and festivals,” says DeMetro.

He added that most countries organize events via the New York Film Festival, but Greece is typically unable to afford such a venue. Instead, it relies on goodwill and private donations. “Fortunately, we have loyal supporters who support us every year. The festival presents not only movies, but also Greece,” DeMetro says.

The festival will be held from October 18 to 30. It is sponsored by the Hellenic American Chamber of Commerce, the Onassis Foundation, the Agnes Varis Charitable Trust and the Hellenic American Cultural Foundation.
