Greek Diaspora Votes in Nisyros

nisyros

The fact that many Greeks traveled from New York to the Greek island of Nisyros during the local elections in order to vote, has raised the issue of voting from one’s place of residence once more. Voters of the Greek American community demand their right to have a say in Greek politics without having to travel so far.

Nisyros is the ultimate indicative case of the strong relationships and the deep connection between diaspora Greeks and their homeland since more than 60 diaspora Greeks traveled to the island to cast their ballot. Furthermore, the newly elected mayor of Nisyros, Christofis Koronaios, has lived in the U.S for a long period being an active part of Greek-American Institutions. His Greek-American compatriots think of him as “a part of Diaspora.”
