As it was estimated by OnAlert, the U.S. is opposing the plans of the Turkish government to turn Hagia Sophia into a mosque so that Erdogan and other Islamic leaders can pray there during the anniversary the Fall of Constantinopole on May 29.
Moreover, the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) in this year’s report rated Turkey negatively and opposed the opening of Hagia Sophia for the prayer of Muslims.
The same report also stressed that the internet bans pose a problem to freedom of religion and belief. According to the report, the request for the conversion of Hagia Sophia into a mosque led to great frustration in Christian communities. The Turkish newspaper Taraf, wrote about this issue in an article entitled “U.S. Reaction about Hagia Sophia.”
