American Archaeologist Presents ‘The Parthenon Enigma’ in Washington

Parthenon_enigmaJoan Breton Connelly, an American archaeologist, writer and professor of Classics and Art History at New York University, presented her latest book, “The Parthenon Enigma: A New Understanding of the World’s Most Iconic Building and the People Who Made It,” at the Embassy of Greece in Washington, on May, 7.

Connelly talked about the “secrets” of the Parthenon and invited the audience to thoroughly examine the most “recognizable building of all time.” According to Connelly, the Parthenon is not only an impressive building, but it also symbolizes the ideals of democracy and the moral obligations of citizens.

Joan Breton Connelly is challenging our most basic assumptions about the Parthenon and the ancient Athenians. She probes the building itself as well as the ancient Athenian society revealing that Athens was not the city of staid philosophers, rationalists, and rhetoricians, but a world in which our modern conception of democracy would have been incomprehensible.
