US Government Annual Report Sees Greece ‘Terrorism’ as Minor

state-departmentA report released on Wednesday by the U.S. State Department about terrorism in 2013 expects security cooperation between Greek authorities and USA will remain strong.

The report analyzes terrorism for the year 2013. On the chapter about Greece, it is mentioned that most episodes in the country are small-scale terrorist attacks, mainly in the country’s biggest cities, Athens and Thessaloniki. Furthermore, it notes that most terrorist attacks are organized by Greek anarchist groups, which target ministries, banks, private vehicles and tax offices in order to pass a political message and not to cause casualties.

Moreover, the report focuses on a specific attack on January 14, when unknown assailants torched a Citibank branch in Neo Iraklio, Athens. There was minor damage and no one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

With regards to Greek legislation for law enforcement and border security, the report refers to specific chapters of the Greek penal code concerning the ‘war on terror’ and to articles of the Greek Constitution that require Greek citizens to adhere to international law. Meanwhile, it stressed that the Directorate of Special Crimes of Violence (DAEEV) is responsible for combating terrorism in Greece.

The report notes that DAEEV is extremely dynamic and attracts highly motivated and educated young officers, while the unit has shown great ability in gathering information. However, it lacks the ability to use the volume of information collected and share it with other services within the Greek Police and Coast Guard.

Finally, the report notes that Greece is participating in various international organizations, and cooperating on an international and regional level to combat the phenomena of terrorism financing, money laundering and financial crimes.
