Stavros Niarchos Foundation Awards €16m in Grants

Stavros Niarchos FoundationOn April 29, the Stavros Niarchos Foundation (SNF) presented its new round of grants in the areas of arts and culture, education, health and medicine, and social welfare.

The SNF board approved 67 new grants, totalling approximately 16 million euros in support of programs and initiatives by Greek and international non-profit organizations, and come in addition to both its three-year, 100-million-euro initiative to support Greek society during the economic crisis, as well as its more recent initiative, also of 100 million euros, which aims to tackle the high levels of youth unemployment in Greece.

Between October 2013 and April 2014, the SNF has supported new programs worth more than 18.7 million euros.

More specifically, through 25 grants of more than 5.5 million euros, the SNF has supported training programs for young artists in several countries, as well as initiatives aimed to the international promotion of Greek culture and the support of contemporary Greek artists.

It also awarded worth more than 5.8 million euros in 36 new grants for educational programs, scholarship schemes and vocational training programs to improve accessibility to knowledge. Particular emphasis was also placed on programs striving to cultivate critical thought and promoting civic engagement.

The Foundation invested more than 2.5 million euros in eight new grants in the area of health and medicine, supporting among other things innovative healthcare models and enhancement of knowledge and research, as well as improving hospital units and contributing to the fight against global health problems such as HIV/AIDS.

Thirty new social welfare programs received more than 4.8 million euros, with two fundamental aims: creating new employment opportunities for the new generation, and supporting the most vulnerable social groups worldwide to have been most severely affected by the consequences of the economic crisis.

Co-president of the SNF board, Andreas Dracopoulos, said: “Despite the fact that we are living in one of the most advanced and prosperous times in history, humanity is facing a series of critical socioeconomic challenges. We are fully aware of the fact that we cannot tackle such numerous and complex issues on our own. Our aim, with each cycle of grants we approve, is to attempt to ensure that we will achieve the greatest possible impact, but also that the grants will help all those in most need of support.
