Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey freshman Sam Anas, formerly of the Youngstown Phantoms of the United States Hockey League (USHL), was named the 2014 ECAC Hockey Co-Rookie of the Year, sharing the award with St. Lawrence’s Gavin Bayreuther, as voted on by the league’s office.

Anas is the third Quinnipiac player – joining Bryan Leitch in 2006 and Brandon Wong in 2007 – honored as a recipient of the ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Year award. On Thursday, Mar. 20, Anas was named to the ECAC Hockey Third Team as well as the ECAC Hockey All-Rookie Team.

On the year, Anas is one of three 20-goal scorers in NCAA Division I men’s ice hockey after tallying 22 to date. In the process he became just the fifth Quinnipiac freshman in the Division I history to reach the 20-goal mark. In addition, he is just the second Quinnipiac freshman – along with Brian Herbert – to tally 20 goals and 20 assists in his first season. Anas’ 22 goals and 43 points lead all NCAA Division I freshmen and he is the only freshman with 40 points for the year.

Greek-American Sam Anas from Potomac, Md is majoring in Business and is the son of Peter and Demetra Anas.
