Marathon Curriculum in Massachusetts Schools

Boston_Marathon_2013The Boston Marathon of 2013, sadly marked by the terrorist attack against thousands of peaceful citizens, has become a source of inspiration and creativity. A group of middle school teachers inĀ Hopkinton, which was the starting point of the 2013 Boston Marathon, have created a marathon-based curriculum, aiming to teach students the powerful spirit of the Marathon from its start in the ancient Greece until the modern era.

Debra Pinto, health and physical education teacher, was the inspiration of the program, entitled “Desire to inspire.” According to Pinto this program is an effort to move beyond the terrorist attack at the 2013 Boston Marathon which killed three people. “After what happened in Boston last year, I wanted a way to bring the spirit of the Marathon into our curriculum. We needed to move forward and tap into the positive spirit, ” said Pinto to Boston Globe.

Students will examine the Boston Marathon finish times from previous years to make various calculations, learn about the effect training has on the human body and how a healthy diet can affect performance. History teachers will show the Ā connection between the ancient Greeksā€™ battle for freedom in Marathon and the celebration of Patriots Day in the center of the city.

Pinto hopes that the marathonĀ curriculum will be used as a model for similar programs inĀ schools along the marathon route from Hopkinton to Boston, as well as in schools across the world.
