U.S. City Wants to Become Sister City with Ancient Olympia

Colorado Springs Press ConferenceColorado Springs, known as America’s Olympic City, wants to pursue a Sister City relationship with Ancient Olympia, in Greece.

Ancient Olympia is a city also known for its Olympic history, which is why the Mayor and the city council are trying to link the two cities by Sister City ties. “What we have announced today is our initiative to consider a Sister City relationship with Ancient Olympia, Greece, the birthplace of the Olympics,” said the Mayor of Colorado Springs Steve Bach.

According to the Mayor, the Sister City relationship with Ancient Olympia will be beneficial for both cities. It will create various opportunities for cultural activities and exchanges between them and it will strengthen the cities’ connection to the Olympic games.

“Being a citizen of Colorado Springs over the past six years, I’ve come to realize all of the efforts that the city makes on an Olympic level. At the same time, I realized not a lot of people know what the Olympic movement is all about,” said Harris Kalofonos from Greece who works as a consultant at USA Wrestling.

Both Mayor Bach and Mr. Kalofonos believe that the two cities need to promote this international relationship as both cities can learn from one another and help one another because they share an interest in Olympic games and have an Olympic history.

The Mayor will be meeting next week with the leader of Colorado Springs Sister Cities International in order to discuss how to pursue and promote this potential Sister City relationship.
