Malliotakis Honored for her Services After Hurricane Sandy

Nicole Malliotakis GalaAfter Hurricane Sandy violently hit the state of New York, Nicole Malliotakis, state Assemblywoman with origins from Greece became one of the most hardworking citizens of Staten Island, helping and supporting people living in the most severely damaged neighborhoods recover from the Hurricane’s hit. She worked day and night to help the rebuilding of houses and supporting the victims.

On Saturday January 25, Rev. Protopresbyter Nicholas P. Petropoulakos, head of Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, Bulls Head, honored Ms. Malliotakis for her services to the community after the Hurricane Sandy at the church’s annual gala at the Vanderbilt at South Beach.

“She had been on the streets before the storm was even over. She had literally rolled up her sleeves and gone to work. She was there night and day, early and late, to ensure everyone was getting some help,” stated Rev. Petropoulakos.

The gala had traditional Greek character thanks to the chairman of the gala committee Diane Vernados. It was also a reminder of all the remaining work that needs to be done in order to fully restore the city from the damages and relocate all the victims.

“Our community, for the last 15 months, has been suffering tremendously, and each and every day we see families and businesses getting back to some type of normalcy, but still there’s a lot to do,” stated Ms. Malliotakis at the gala. During her speech she also thanked among others, the volunteers that played an irreplaceable role in the recovering of the neighborhoods and the voluntary organizations created after the hurricane, such as The Staten Island Alliance, founded by hurricane victim Tom Consulo. “It is a celebration of having a community that is so strong and so willing to help one another, and I think that’s what we’re really celebrating here today,” she concluded.

The gala was also attended by other state representatives who during their speeches honored Ms. Malliotakis with their touching words.
