New York Times Predicts Early Elections in Greece

Samaras_VenizelosThe opening ceremony of the Greek EU presidency held in Athens on January 8, seems to be the focus on American media. The New York times reported that if the Greek Prime Minister, Antonis Samaras does badly in the European elections, then he will be forced to proceed with earlier national elections in 2014.

Specifically, the newspaper notes that if the Greek presidency is successful “this may give the government in Athens a necessary push before May’s elections for the European Parliament, which in Greece will coincide with elections for municipal and provincial governments.”

According to the article, this presidency isn’t typical as the elections for the European Parliament are expected to be profitable for the extreme right parties, who aim to downgrade the European Union.

The Times also questions whether Greece — which depends on foreign loans — will manage to achieve the goal of strengthening Europe’s capacity to deal with the current financial and social challenges. “Can Greece afford the cost, in treasure and human resources, when its economy has shrunk by roughly a quarter since 2008, with unemployment over 27%, with taxpayers groaning under the weight of ever higher taxes in return for fewer benefits, and with the civil service facing drastic cuts?”

Meanwhile, the Financial Times referred to the opening ceremony and the statements of Evangelos Venizelos, Greece’s Deputy Prime Minister, who claimed that the allegations for requiring lenders to accept losses on their rescue loans are invalid. Venizelos described these rumors as insulting to Greece and pointed out that the country is “correct to its partners and its obligations.”
