Report On Turkey Handed to Congress and UNESCO

Aghia SophiaThe Hellenic American Leadership Council (HALC), after the announcement of the Turkish government’s plans to convert the Orthodox Church of Aghia Sophia into a mosque, proceeded with a report of Turkey in Congress.

A HALC delegation met with members of Congress, and gave them a letter with more than 25,000 signatures from around the world, which express the strong protests of people. HALC asked the U.S. government to  intervene in order to maintain Aghia Sophia as an Orthodox Church.

According to HALC, Americans MPs  expressed their dissatisfaction with the Turkish statements regarding Aghia Sophia, and the general behavior of Turkey on issues concerning Orthodoxy and Hellenism.

Executives of HALC also handed the same letter with the signatures to UNESCO, which has named the Orthodox Church as an UNESCO World Heritage Monument.
