Photos of Cypriot Civilization Exhibited in USA

cyprusCypriot awarded journalist-photojournalist Antigone Solomonidou Drysiotou presented fifty photographs New York, inspired from her birthplace. After several exhibitions in European cities it’s the first one in the United States.
The exhibition took place on Tuesday night with Archbishop Demetrios of America, in the presence of UN officials, permanent representatives of many countries , diplomats and correspondents accredited to the international organization and executives, and include Greek entities as well.

Primate of Orthodox Church in America featured this exhibition as “Language of peace and cooperation and added that “works of art with real feelings and powerful messages for coexistence.”

Archbishop Demetrios also congratulated Antigone Solomonidou Drousiotou and declared that visual presentation is a tragically divided place, taking us all to a deeper level of a truly existential experience. It takes us beyond the realm of conflicts between nations and international discussions leading to our final destination of humanism and into the inter-generational cultural beauty of Cyprus. These photographs depict vivid stories of people’s lives, and strongly invite us to intensify and strengthen our efforts to promote peace, justice and reconciliation in Cyprus and around the world.

The Permanent Representative of Cyprus to the UN , Ambassador Nikos Aemilius , presented Mrs. Solomonidou Drousiotou and mentioned on “promising individuals” photographs on importance of this venue for the exhibition. In addition, Mr. Aemilius talked about “creative persistence” of a nation to preserve its historical memory for fighting at the same time for human rights and peace.

Cypriot journalist – photographer referred to symbolism and messages that emerge through her photographs, she said as she walked the streets of Cyprus photographing people- “they seemed both similar and different, quaintly living so close yet so far apart. However, this is our homeland.” A dot on the map consists of a crossroads of cultures, religions and beliefs. From this beautiful journey only the smile from people brings hope and cast aside human pain. The selection of this trip is part of the photographs presented in the exhibition with figures from a small Mediterranean neighborhood to New York, the symbol of coexistence and multiculturalism.

The exhibition of Antigone Solomonidou Drousiotou , which includes photographs from the last job entitled “Cyprus Figures: cultural diversity – convergence and coexistence” would have become the Capitol of Washington in cooperation with the Cypriot embassy in USA; but it was not possible due to government’s shutdown.

The exhibition to the UN headquarters lasting until Friday, has been organized by Permanent Mission of the Republic of Cyprus, to the United Nations and Cyprus Consulate General in New York as well; supported by Cyprus Federation of America and the Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture Cyprus.
