Samaras’ Visit Marks USA’s Support to Greece

9BD597DBF4A7F08B10B2B5FAD1F7F718In an interview with the Greek Service of Voice of America, the multimedia international broadcasting service, William Antholis, the Greek-American director of Brookings, which is considered one of the major think tanks in Washington, said that President Obama has been throughout the ongoing Greek crisis, an advocate of a mild reform effort in order to bring development, in contrast with the policy of austerity promoted by Germany.

According to Antholis both the President himself and other American officials have publicly expressed their opposition to this attitude several times in the past. However, Antholis noted that Obama could not be more dynamic, as this would be regarded as U.S. intervention in the internal EU issues.

Then, he added that the agenda of the  talks between Obama and Samaras will include  matters referred to the statement issued by the White House, which concern Greece’s efforts for economic reforms and restoration of the country to prosperity, the defense cooperation of the two countries, regional cooperation, joint efforts to tackle terrorism, the resolution of the Cyprus issue, developments in countries of North Africa and Syria.

Finally, Antholis said that the two leaders in their meeting should be aware of what the former U.S. president, Bill Clinton had identified, during his visit to Athens last year,  “ Greece is and remains a rich country.”
