Greece to Receive U.S. CHINOOK Choppers

chinook_night-630x412Greece is expected to receive 10-12 Chinook helicopters from the USA after the visits of Defense Minister, Dimitris Avramopoulos, (end of month) and Prime Minister, Antonis Samaras, in Washington on August 8.

The whole” package” for the Chinook – as part of a wider agreement for allotment of defense material has been discussed since 2010 – and the agreement seems to have been signed some  months ago. An official visit is going to be made to officially announce the agreement. At least this was said by members of the former Leadership in MOD.

The request on the Chinook helicopters was delivered by the Greek side, based on the argument that there is a delay in the arrival of other European NH-90. The U.S. replied to this argument as it” highlights” the unreliability of the European defense industry, along with the recognition of the real need to restore the possibility of air transfer of the Greek Army which uses the very old Huey and the five ( received) new NH-90. Whether and how the Greek Chinook program will operate is something that depends on other factors which still have to be considered by both sides.
