N.Y. Restaurants Picking Greek Wine

47a122e735ab6a830a0218018b8e1847_LThe new trend observed among the finest restaurants in New York raises many hopes for Greek wine and Greece.

Oenologist Chryssa Giatra said there is no good restaurant in the metropolis of the world that doesn’t offer Greek wine to its customers now, with wine picking up the mantle of Greek yogurt as a hot commodity.

At the same time, in almost all export fronts, Greek wine is expanding its share beyond traditional buyers such as Germany, France, Austria, Switzerland, to new markets as well, like the USA, Canada, Russia, China, Lithuania, Finland and Korea.

Ironically, driven by high new taxes, Greeks are shunning their own product, with wine consumption last year falling 8 percent in the first half of 2012 and 15 percent in the second half, while exports of Greek wine went up 25 percent.

“The Greek wine is a force equivalent – at least at the level of quality – to that one of French and Italian wine,” said Giatra, who stressed that things have drastically changed since the smaller Greek winery businesses have entered the exports game.
