Foreign Minister Avramopoulos in Washington

76EE24FF-3754-43B7-9EB4-CC89DBAA87C1_w268_r1Greek Foreign Minister, Dimitris Avramopoulos, paid a short visit to the U.S.A. He was the main speaker at the annual forum of the American Jewish Committee in Washington.

Describing the contemporary social reality in Greece, Avramopoulos mentioned challenges that “political forces pose that degrade our democratic and humanist traditions.” Without referring specifically to the anti-Semitic words used recently in Greece by wings such as the Golden Dawn, Avramopoulos stressed that, “Greece will never allow hatred to grow and spread.” He said that hatred will be treated and eliminated and that such things are the result of the economic crisis in many European countries.

Regarding the new peace initiatives of the U.S. Secretary of State in the Middle East, Avramopoulos stressed that such efforts have the “full support of Greece, because Greece and Israel are the most stable and mature democracies in the region. We are united by our common efforts to cooperate against terrorism and for security and stability in the region.”

During his short visit to the U.S.A, Avramopoulos also met with representatives of the Greek-American community and members of the International Coordinating Committee Justice for Cyprus which this week is having its annual conference in Washington.
