Tornado Destroys Greek Family’s Home

OklachomaA family of Greek descent living in the suburbs of Oklahoma City lost their home to the devastating tornado that hit the area on the afternoon of May 20.

VOA talked with Susan Vasilakos, a resident of the area who knows the family. Vasilakos, a resident of the suburb Norman, said that the members of the family affected are in good health.

“I know a Greek family who lost their home, their house disappeared,” she said.

“On Sunday morning mass was cancelled as power cables had fallen in front of the church and the surrounding streets were closed. But yesterday’s tornado was very destructive”.

Vasilakos’ house is located 11 kilometers from Moore, where the biggest disasters occurred. “I saw and I heard the tornado,” she said.

“It seemed like hovering and not moving, but devastated a very large area. Tornadoes are common in this area but there have never been such big disasters. The same happened in 1999 and everything that was destroyed, was rebuilt. But there are children who lost their parents then. Things are difficult here. But the residents of Oklahoma are helping each other. And we will help this family who lost their home.”

The family belongs to the parish of St. George, which is located 20 kilometers from the area hit by the tornado.

Overall, 124 families of Greek descent belong to the parish.
