Gloria Sfiroudis was honored by the United Federation of Teachers at the UFT Scholarship Dinner on April 25 at Russo’s on the Bay in New York. She was presented with a plaque by Rosemary Parker, UFT District 24, Representative which reads as follows, “In Recognition for Your Union Activism and Untiring Commitment to the Student at P.S.229.”

She has been a teacher for 50 years, all grades from K to 6th Grade. She held positions as Assistant Principal, Corrective Reading, Talented and Gifted, Educational Enrichment and Teachers College Writing and Reader’s Workshop.

Presently, she is a Teacher of Library/Technology. In this capacity, she has conducted numerous workshops, staff development and curriculum writing for teachers.

Sfiroudis raises funds for many causes including the March of Dimes, Cancer Walk/Run for Women and Emergency Disaster Funds. She has been designated Ambassador to UNICEF because the Trick or Treat collections have exceeded expectations. She is active in a variety of civic and cultural organizations including the President of the Ladies Philoptochos Society of St. Nicholas Shrine Church of Flushing.

Sfiroudis has won many grants for the students, one of which was the CVS grant for $75,000. Monies went to purchase non-fiction books for the library.

Among her awards are Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers, Who’s Who of America’s Women, Hospital Audiences Inc., UNICEF and the Agape St. Nicholas Pastor’s Award.

Her philosophy is that there is a purpose and value in life. “In teaching, I believe that, ‘The wise teacher does not bid you to enter the house of wisdom but rather leads you to the threshold of your own mind,'” she said.
