Kalamata Olives From Italy in Miami

OLIVESThe Mayor of Kalamata, Panagiotis Nikas, received a strange phone call from America. It was from a  Greek traveling to Miami, who told him that although he was delighted to be served a salad with Kalamata olives, he was displeased when the waitress told him Kalamata is in Italy.

Michael Kormalos from the Greek island of Chios, went on a business trip to Miami with some friends and went to eat at a restaurant. When they asked for Greek salad, the waitress brought them a salad with Kalamata olives, pitted and cut in three. Although the olives were not of excellent quality, there was no problem.

Kormalos asked the waitress what kind of olives they were and she said “Kalamata olives”. Then he asked the waitress where Kalamata is located and she asked him to follow her and ask the chef, who said that “Kalamata is in Italy.”

Kormalos replied that “there is only one Kalamata and this is located in Greece” and decided to call the Mayor of Kalamata and report the incident.

The Mayor thanked him and praised him for his concern about the high value popular Greek agri-food product. Finally, the mayor said that within the next days he would send a letter to the restaurant in Miami along with a guide of the city and the region.
