Comic Superheroes Posed As Greek Art

hydebatman-586x480Nicholas Hyde, an artist from Portland, Oregon, has created art prints that show contemporary comic book superheroes as ancient Greek art, combining the past with today’s tastes.

The artist, influenced by the numerous figures of the ancient Greek amphorae, decided to make his own version and created Batman, Spiderman and Thor, the heroes of Marvel and DC comics, in an orange-black background, as if the figures are painted on the clay, with the red figure pottery technique.

Red-figure vase painting is one of the most important styles of figural Greek vase painting. It developed in Athens around 520 B.C. and remained in use until the late 3rd century B.C.

It replaced the previously dominant style of Black-figure vase painting within a few decades. Its modern name is based on the figural depictions in red color on a black background, in contrast to the preceding black-figure style with black figures on a red background.

Hyde began with three popular superheroes and if sales of his his works that are visible on Etsy and Society6 go well, he will continue with other superheroes.

Hyde says he began painting in San Francisco when the New Age Era was just beginning to bloom (1967,) when the possibilities were endless, boundaries were boundless. Cryptyde was the beginning of the successful psychedelic series along with BethAnn, The Estate of Man & Urp.  His most successful paintings were printed in posters and notecards and the Visions book published by Pomegranite Press in Rhonert Park, Calif.  There was an effort made to establish a San Francisco Visionary Art Movement in those days, where his works played a strong role.
