Marina And The Diamonds talks to Markos Papadatos about her newest album, Electra Heart, and her Lonely Hearts Club tour, as well as her single How to be a Heartbreaker. What is particularly impressive about her, is that she either wrote or co-wrote every song on her album.
Born Marina Diamandis, she has been praised by YouTube sensation and singer-songwriter Eli Lieb. “Marina’s style is slightly similar to mine and I feel that a collaboration with her would be really awesome. She is great,” he told Suite101 Online Magazine.
Marina revealed that her father is of Greek origin. “I lived in Greece for about four years of my life and living there had a huge impact on my life growing up. My father was very much adamant that we would learn about our culture. It’s a very rich culture to be a part of since it has such a great history behind it. I definitely carry that in my job and I am very passionate. I get even angry quite easily when things don’t go my way,” Marina said with a laugh.
She noted that her biggest musical influences include Madonna, Annie Lennox, Dolly Parton, as well as Fiona Apple. Though she has not made any collaborations yet in her career, she listed Madonna as her dream duet choice.
Her newest radio single, How To Be A Heartbreaker, was recently featured on Glee. “That was a bit surreal, because it was my teenage dream coming true. It was a fun experience,” Marina acknowledged.
She disclosed that the song’s music video features some Danish underwear models. “It was a very fun video to make. I just like the commercial appeal of it. In music videos the guys are all the players and I just wondered what it would be like if it were the other way around,” she said.
Marina is about to kick off her headlining Lonely Hearts Club tour in May. This tour will support her latest critically-acclaimed album Electra Heart, which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Album Charts in the United Kingdom. “That was an amazing thing and although I didn’t appreciate it as much during the time that it happened, looking back I am really proud of that,” she explained.
On May 29, she will be playingin a show at New York City’s Central Park SummerStage at Rumsey Playfield. “It’s my biggest gig so far and the actual show itself is going to be theatrical,” Marina said.
As for her future plans, she stated that after her tour in May, she will be doing more promo in America and will be working on her forthcoming CD. She is also expected to release her Heartcore documentary, based on her headlining tour.
Marina noted that a huge difference when she sings in the studio and when she performs in front of a live audience. “When you are in the studio you don’t have anybody to feed off of, meanwhile when you are playing live you interact with people and you feel the energy in the room. When the crowd is going crazy that definitely impacts your vocal performance. I prefer to sing live,” the pop-dance songstress shared.
Even in her spare time, Marina enjoys writing music. “Music is my 90% of my life and my biggest passion. I really don’t have an interest in anything else,” she concluded.
