Panos Bousalis’ Tribute to Legendary Xylouris

imagesThere is one person in the history of Cretan music who stands out because he became well known beyond the island’s borders. No one will ever erase the voice of one of the greatest Greek singers, Nikos Xylouris, nicknamed Psaronikos, whose talent made him internationally known.

The Greek Cultural Center of Astoria, New York, paid tribute to the Archangel of Crete with Panos Bousalis and the Greek Cultural Center’s choir. The concert took place on Feb. 23, at the Tony Bennett Hall, Frank Sinatra School of Arts.

Born in Anogia in 1936, heir to his village’s great musical tradition, Xylouris began working professionally at the end of the 1950’s and rapidly became known as one of the best singers of his generation.

Panos Bousalis along with the Greek Cultural Center’s choir members’ program and the musicians, made a significant contribution to this special event and included some of the many songs of Xylouris, Erotokritos and Thourios among others.

Ourania Xylouri was awarded an honorary plaque in memory of her husband. Among those who attended the event, was also Consul of Greece to New York, Evangelos Kyriakopoulos.
