Brothel Owner’s Soccer Sponsorship Blasted

Apart from the debt, Eurogroup’s decision, and financial problems in Greece, the New York Times journal cited Dec. 3, an extended article on a former prostitute from the city of Larissa, who is said to be the new sponsor of the local football team Voukefalas.

NYT presents 67 year-old Soula Aleuridou, also known as Madame Soula.  It all started when a friend asked her help for the team and she immediately accepted to be their new sponsor.

Kostas Tzanakoulis, Mayor of Larissa, avoided questions on this subject, while the Larissa Football Federation said that any kind of promotion using Madame Soula’s job is not welcome.

Yiannis Batziolas, President of Voukefalas, condemned the Larissa Football Federation’s reaction and said that professional football teams are sponsored by the public company OPAP (Greek Organisation of Football Prognostics S.A), which manages numerical lottery and sports betting games in Greece.

NYT’s report cites some statements given by Voukefalas’s players, who claim that there is no other way to rescue the team and believe that it is not negative the fact that their sponsor is a brothel. It is said that local officials in this once-rich farming area are hardly thanking her for her efforts.

On the other hand, Madame Soula asks: “Do they have anyone else to give them money?”
