Smyrna Catastrophe Recalled by AHI

Greek Ambassador to the United States, Christos Panagopoulos, attended a commemorating ceremony for the 90th anniversary of the fall of Smyrna, an event organized by the American Hellenic Institute (AHI.) It was held in the cemetery of the Oak Hill Funeral Home & Memorial Park, where George Horton, former United States Consul General at Smyrna, is buried.

Horton is widely known through the book The Blight of Asia, referring to what he considered the barbaric behavior of the Ottoman Turks with the atrocities involved in their taking of the then-Greek city in Asia Minor and the end of its Hellenic history.

Panagopoulos referred to American diplomacy’s important contribution to the truthful depiction of the historical events, with eyewitness accounts, while noting that in 21st Century people have to move forward but without forgetting what happened to Smyrna.
