New York Times Praises Greek Diner in Brooklyn

The Greek restaurant in Brooklyn, Kellogg’s Diner, has once again been found in the center of attention by the American press. Daily News published a long article describing the diner a few days ago, while The New York Times dedicated an article titled “Floating Groggily Between Night and Day” two days ago, which described every single moment in the Greek diner from the early dawn till the very first setting of the sun.

According to Fotis Fiotodimitrakis, owner of the diner, these two articles came as a result of the general improvement of the region of Williamsburg in Brooklyn over the last decade.

The region is regarded as one of America’s most rapidly developing neighborhoods. The fact that many artists have moved to Brooklyn and that beautiful buildings are being built has contributed to the area’s upgrade.

Mr. Fotodimitrakis explained to The National Herald that Williamsburg has changed completely, not only because of the new building constructions, but mainly because the quality of life along with safety has improved amazingly in the region.

The warm and friendly Greek diner has played its own role in this safety and as The NY Times article notes time passes harmonically in Kellogg’s: “Is it tonight or tomorrow? Last night or this morning? How do you bid a stranger farewell? Is it “good night,” “have a nice day” or “get home safely — you sure you’re all right?”

The diner was bought by the Fotodimitraki brothers back in the 1970s and has been redecorated many times ever since. Last time was in 2008, when the diner’s spaces were expanded to fit 170 customers (it previously accomodated 70). The initial diner is estimated to have started functioning 120 years ago.

Kellogg’s Diner owners employ 60 people, including Greek-Americans. Mr. Fotodimitrakis has also served as President of the historic Cretan Association “Omonia.”

It is noteworthy that there are many Greek businesses in Williamsburg of Brooklyn and many estates belong to Greek families.
