Tarpon Springs: Damage, Injuries and a Stolen Ambulance at Greek Easter Celebration

Greek Easter got a little out of hand in Tarpon Springs last night.
Witnesses say explosives went off late into the night. It’s tradition to set off small, homemade bombs in the Greek Easter celebration, but one that went off at a business on Tarpon Avenue apparently caused some damage.
That happened next to The Zone Lounge.

Officers finally left that area early Sunday after a night of investigating. A witness said at least three people were treated for injuries, and a worker at the nightclub said the building has some serious damage.

“I was standing outside and I heard a couple of firecrackers go off and then a loud, huge boom went off,” said witness Chris Sessler, who works at the nightclub. “The next thing you know, people are running out of the bar. The whole back of the bar, all the glass is broke back there. All upstairs, busted to pieces.”

Another witness said the explosion “knocked me right off the couch.”
“I thought it was an earthquake,” he said. “I’m thinking 2012 is over right now.”

That wasn’t all that went down at the scene. Someone stole an ambulance while paramedics were attending to a person cut by broken glass. The ambulance was recoverd about a mile away and arrest was made, but police haven’t issued an official statement yet.
