300 Byzantine Masterpieces To Be Exhibited in the US in 2013

Although the title of the exhibition is subject to change, it certainly provides a detailed description of the exhibit that will take place about a year from now in the US.

Entitled “Byzantium: Masterpieces from Greek Collections”, the exhibition will include some 300 artifacts from different private and public Museums and monasteries in Greece, as well as findings from recent excavations.

The exhibits will travel to the US in autumn 2013 to be  presented at the National Gallery of Art in Washington and then at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu, California.

The exhibition is scheduled to be openen to the public in spring 2014, and aims at introducing the Greek culture of the Byzantium era to American audiences. The exhibit will cover all periods of Byzantine history, from 330 AD to 1453. Moreover, this initiative aims to fill the gaps created by respective exhibitions organized by Turkey in the US and elsewhere.

The Central Archaeological Council of Greece has submitted an opinion Tuesday approving the co-organization of the periodical archaeological exhibition by the General Directorate of Antiquities of the Greek Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Benaki Museum.

The exhibition included five separate units currently entitled “From Antiquity to Byzantium”, “The Christian World”, “The Intellectuals”, “Pleasures of life” and “Byzantium at crossroads”.
