Wall Street Journal Praises Greek Exhibition Αt Alexander Onassis Foundation NYC

The US Media has made several extensive reports on the new exhibition hosted at the Cultural Centre of the Alexander S. Onassis Public Benefit Foundation in Manhattan, NY. The exhibition entitled “Transition to Christianity: Art of Late Antiquity, 3rd-7th century AD” was inaugurated on December 7, 2011, and will be open to the public until May 14, 2012.

In its most recent report, the Wall Street Journal has described the current exhibition of the Foundation as one of the most important to take place this year. Among others, the exhibition is reported to include 170 “exceptional artifacts” from the collections of different museums across Greece, Cyprus and the USA.

“Walking by them, the visitor can see both unique artifacts that have travelled beyond the Greek borders and recently excavated findings which are being displayed for the very first time” reads a paragraph of the report.

The report continues with a description of the artifacts exhibited, which reveal the creative forces of the Late Antiquity era, an era that depicts the gradual transition to a new social, political and religious reality.

The exhibition offers visitors illuminating information on sculpture and painting. The Christian religion turned the three-dimensional sculpture art into a more static, one-dimensional expression, since the new religion rejected natural art. Paintings also lost much of their perspective and depth due to the symbolic meaning icons were attributed with.
