Musical Presentation of Cavafy’s Poems in US and European Universities

The poignant sounds of Diaspora Greek musicians who have rarely been heard in the US will be combined with the poetry of Cavafy and presented at universities in Europe and the USA.

Michigan University Professor Vassilios Lampropoulos proposed this program along with famous contralto Alexandra Grava and the young pianist Pantelis Polychronidis.

The premiere of Cavafy’s program, sponsored by the Onassis Foundation in New York, will be held on the 16th of April at the University of Michigan, and later on at other US universities such as Yale University and Columbia University.

Seventeen songs based on the poetry of Cavafy will be presented, with accompaniment provided by Pantelis Polychronidis on piano, followed by a lecture given by Professor Vassilios Lampropoulos.

According to members of the organization committee of the event, several composers such as Mikis Theodorakis, Manos Chatjidakis, Dimitris Mitropoulos, and many other American and Diaspora Greek composers have used multiple methods to compose music for the poetry of Cavafy.
