Ancient Greek Coins to Be Auctioned in New York

The economic turmoil in Greece has recently gained the world’s attention, but ancient Greek coins will be the centre of attention in New York this week.

A collection of more than 600 ancient Greek coins is expected to fetch millions of dollars as it is put up for auction on Wednesday.

British coin expert Paul Hill says collectors consider ancient Greek coins to be some of the finest and most artistic currency ever produced.

The coins depict such iconic ancient Greek images as gods, minotaurs, and Alexander the Great in battle. The rarest coin in the collection, engraved with pictures of a satyr and a griffin, is about 6,000 years old and estimated to be worth $650,000.

The collection was gathered from across the ancient Greek empire, which included parts of modern-day Libya and Pakistan.

Hill concludes that many people are investing in coins now as an alternative to shaky banks and the volatile global stock market.
