US House Resolution Urges Turkey to Return Confiscated Church Property

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution, urging the Republic of Turkey to protect its Christian heritage and return confiscated religious property.

The H.Res.306, supported by all parties, expresses the view of the U.S. House of Representatives that the U.S. Secretary of the State, in all official contacts with Turkish leaders and other Turkish officials, should emphasize that Turkey should end all forms of religious discrimination, end restrictions on the training, appointment and ordination of Christian clerics, return all Christian Churches and properties to their rightful owners and fully respect the right of Christians to express their religious beliefs, without hindrance.

The resolution was drafted by Republican Ed Royce and Democrat Howard Berman from California, supported by the co – chairs of the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues, Carolyn Maloney, Democrat from NY, and Gus Bilirakis, Republican from Florida, and other caucuses, such as the Caucus on Armenian issues and the human rights caucus.

The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association, AHEPA, applauded the Congressional Resolution, and Supreme AHEPA President, John Grossomanides stated that “this resolution stands in the proud American tradition of championing religious freedom around the world”, adding “having been adopted, this measure further reinforces our nation’s commitment to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights”.
