Greek American Homeowners Association Sends Out Message of Humanity and Solidarity During Thanksgiving

The Greek American Homeowners Association celebrated the ideals of solidarity and humanity in its annual Thanksgiving lunch on Thursday the 24th of November. For the 22nd time in a row, the non-profit organization functioning within the Greek Community organized the lunch providing people in need with food, warmth, human support and entertainment.

Hundreds of people with financial problems attended the event and received a warm meal and many more goods offered. Famous Diaspora singer Seraphim Lazos added to the festive atmosphere by entertaining 70% of all ethnic and religious background Americans and 30% Greeks.

The overall effort of the Greek Community organized across the US has become a central topic on most US media many times in the past.

The Consul of Greece to NY Mr. Evangelos Kyriakopoulos and the General Consul of Cyprus to NY Mrs. Koula Sofianou attended the event as mere volunteers placed behind the banquet serving meals to children, women and men of all age.

It is estimated that more than 1000 people attended the lunch in order to receive a free meal or take it away home with them. Special tables had been set up offering boxes with food, fruits, sweets and other goods that had piled up after several donations to the Association.

The days before the lunch, the Greek American Homeowners Association had delivered over 500 10- to 12-pound turkeys to families facing serious financial problems.  60-70% of the turkeys delivered goes to Greek families in need and the rest of it goes to American families independent of their nationality or religion.

The Thanksgiving Lunch was also attended by the local Senator Michalis Yiannaris, young Greek NY Assembly Member Mrs. Aravella Simotas and the Archbishop of America Demetrios, who congratulated the organizers and wished them strength and health to continue their philanthropic work.

For the event to take place, organizations start a month before, while more than 250 volunteers take part.
