President Barack Obama conferred by telephone today with former Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou, the White House said in a statement.
Obama thanked Papandreou “for his many contributions to Greece and to Greek-American relations” and assured him that the U.S. “will stand with Greece through these difficult times,” according to the statement, which was e-mailed to reporters as Obama was traveling to Canberra, Australia, after hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Hawaii.
The Athens News Agency reported that Obama and Papandreou discussed the European debt crisis and that the former Greek leader “stressed that more intense and speedier initiatives are required.”
