The US government welcomed the new political developments in Greece with the imminent formation of a cooperation government that will be headed by former European Central Bank (ECB) vice-president and former Bank of Greece (BoG) governor Lucas Papademos, and reiterated that Greece is an important partner and long-standing friend of the US.
Replying to questions during a regular press briefing in Washington on Thursday, US State Department deputy spokesperson Mark Toner said that “we welcome his (Papademos’) appointment”, adding that “we look forward to working with the new Prime Minister, Lucas Papademos”.
“Greece is an important partner and long-standing friend of the United States and we enjoy a very close bilateral relationship, as well as in various multilateral organizations,” Toner reaffirmed.
“We also welcome the consensus that had been reached in Greece over the need to implement the country reform commitments to the IMF as well as the European Union,” he added.
